[Inspired by a neighbour building an extension to a house made of Yorkshire stone]
The rhythmic clink of chisel on stone
Sounds the shaping of the piece to an exact fit
For its niche
In the new wall –
A patchwork pattern of craftsmanship.
How was it conceived?
Section by section:
A domestic dream created a vision of new rooms.
Sketches, plans, blueprints.
Inventories of materials:
Girders, stone, wood….
Sand, cement, gravel…..
And then the work began.
Slowly, steadily, each phase is accomplished.
Heavy digging gouged out the limestone
To make way for foundations.
Mix upon mix of concrete
Made up the solid base.
Breeze block walls rise up at speed,
Giving quick satisfaction
And sign of progress.
But, stone walls need care,
Each piece of stone is individual,
With its own specific shape and size.
The expert eye is needed
To weigh the balance
The appropriate apposition of each stone
To create the perfection of patchwork
Of a Yorkshire stone house wall.
When walls are built, and a roof is in place,
Another craft is called for –
Yorkshire homes are solid;
Sturdy stone fortresses,
Built to withstand the siege of time.
