Welcome to the Erpingham with Calthorpe WI.
We hope that you enjoy looking at our website.
Hopefully this page will help answer your questions but if you have any other questions just contact us and ask…
We meet on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm, usually at the Erpingham Village Hall. The notes from these meetings and the monthly newsletter are sent to every member via e-mail, or paper for those not on e-mail, even if you are unable to attend the meeting. The correspondence from the Norfolk and the National Federation is sent to you this way too. At our meetings we have speakers and demonstrations as well as time for socialising and organising all sorts of outings and events. In December we round off the year by having a Christmas meal together instead of a meeting.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are served during the evening and are free of charge. Members take turns to serve the refreshments. During the refreshment time, members take the opportunity to chat and look at the information table and the sign-up table. We organise outings and visits to places of interest, and if there’s something that you would like to join in with, you just sign up!
We hold a raffle at most monthly meetings. Members donate the prizes, so if you have anything that would make a good prize, do bring it along! Tickets are 50p.
Each member receives a posy of flowers at the meeting in her birthday month.
All correspondence from other WI’s, the Norfolk and the National Federations will be on the side table, along with details of outings, competitions and anything else that looks interesting! It’s all there just waiting for you to make the most of the information and the opportunities available.
Norfolk WI News.
Copies of the WI news will be on the tables at the monthly meeting for you to look at. Please speak to the Treasurer if you would like your own copy as here is a small annual charge.
Guests are welcome to attend one of our meetings free of charge and then may attend up to two more for a small charge. After that they are required to formally join the WI if they wish to attend more meetings.
Every WI has a committee which comprises of a President, a Secretary and a Treasurer plus any member who wishes to be on the committee. The committee is elected every year. If you are interested in joining the committee, have a chat with a current committee member.
Most members are involved with running the WI, and we have a list of the tasks that various teams are doing, such as the raffle, helping with the refreshments etc. If you would like to find out more about joining a team, have a chat with a
Half the subscription that you pay comes back to us, to be used for things like paying the speakers, renting the hall etc. the other half goes to the Norfolk Federation and the National Federation – mostly for administration costs and salaries.
We have a savings scheme where you can pay your subscription in instalments for the following year, rather than pay a lump sum in January. Please see the Treasurer for more details.
We organise a variety of events throughout the year to raise extra money for our funds. If you’d like to help, we’d love to have you!
The Norfolk Federation offers several bursaries which are open to all WI members for educational opportunities, either locally or at Denman College. A draw takes place in March and is announced at the Annual Federation meeting. For more details, look on the WI website. Our WI also has its own bursary of £200 granted every three years, open to all our members.
The Norfolk Federation runs a range of competitions each year, including, craft, writing, photography etc. More details are on the WI website. We enjoy the craft competitions in particular and have done very well in them. They are a great time to get together and discuss ideas and make a high standard of crafts. We have the added benefit of learning new skills as part of this process. There are workshops and craft days run by the Norfolk Federation office and we also run our own workshops.

We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions on how to make our WI an even more exciting, interesting and helpful group. If you have any thoughts on how we can improve, do please have a chat with one of the committee members.
Our walking groups started as a result of a Federation initiative to encourage people to get fit. Although organised by the WI, the groups were to encourage the local community, not just the WI members, to get fitter. The original initiative included walking, swimming and cycling. The title was ‘WI-TRI‘ and was launched in about 2010.
For the sake of clarity, the walking groups and the Nordic walking groups will be called WI community walking groups.
Organised by the WI, but not for WI use exclusively.
The walking groups no longer function in the way they
originally did, although the basic premise of including non-WI members still applies. Therefore, with the group leader’s agreement, we may invite non-WI members to walk with us.
The decision to limit the short walks to ladies only, was a
decision made at the request of the members, by past committees, and is one that the current committee also endorse.
Non-WI members are covered by the WI public liability policy, where the WI have been shown to be negligent.
All other groups are for WI members only.
There’s so much more to the WI than this, of course, so to find out more come and visit us at the Erpingham Village Hall, 7.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
We’d love to see you.
